Hiking Wasson Peak via Kings Canyon is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the desert landscapes of Saguaro National Park. This loop—following Kings Canyon, Hugh Norris, Esperanza, and Gould Mine Trails—offers sweeping views, classic Sonoran Desert scenery, and a peaceful early‑morning atmosphere that makes the climb especially memorable. Starting at dawn helps you beat the heat and catch the desert waking up, from soft birdsong to the quiet movement of wildlife. On our ascent, a pair of coyote slipped between the saguaros and a mule deer stepped onto the trail ahead of us, a reminder of how alive the desert is in those first cool hours of the day.
Best Time to Hike Wasson Peak
My golden rule for desert hiking is simple: start early and avoid the midday heat. For this route up Wasson Peak via Kings Canyon, an early start makes all the difference—especially in summer, when temperatures rise quickly. We set out at first light with a straightforward plan: climb in the cool morning air, enjoy the views from the summit, and be back down before the heat settled in.

Wildlife on the Hugh Norris Trail
The crunch of gravel underfoot and the early chorus of birdsong set the tone for the first mile of the Hugh Norris Trail. We moved slowly, stopping often to listen as the desert woke around us. A coyote slipped quietly between the saguaros, and a pair of mule deer stepped onto the trail ahead, pausing just long enough for us to take in the moment. It was a calm, unhurried start to the climb—one of those stretches where the desert feels fully alive in the cool morning light.

Kings Canyon Ascent to Wasson Peak
At a steady, unhurried pace, it took us around three hours to reach the summit of Wasson Peak via the Kings Canyon Trail. The climb was consistent rather than steep, with plenty of natural pauses to take in the shifting desert scenery as the trail gained elevation.
From the summit, we continued the loop down the Hugh Norris Trail, watching how the vegetation changed with each slope and aspect. Some stretches were lined with dense clusters of cacti, while others opened into rocky, sun‑exposed terrain dotted with low desert shrubs—a subtle reminder of how varied the Tucson Mountains can be over just a few miles.

Panoramic Views on the Esperanza–Gould Mine Loop
There were countless panoramic views to enjoy, each one tempting us to stop for “just one more” photo. The real danger was lingering too long and finding ourselves still on the trail as the midday heat set in.
Eventually, we took a left onto the Esperanza Trail and followed the Gould Mine Trail back to the car — a satisfying loop that showcased the park’s diversity.
Desert Dawn Sounds on the Trail
I loved the hike. More than the views, however, my most vivid memory from the Best Hike in Saguaro National Park was the sounds of the desert at dawn — the soft rustle of the breeze, the close calls of birds, and the buzz of life waking up in the cool morning air. I could have sat there for hours, simply listening. Watch the YouTube clip to hear it for yourself.
