Welcome to Fussyphotos.com
Welcome to Fussyphotos — where trail dust meets storytelling in my corner of the web. I’m Jack, also known as Fussyphotos (my trail name from the Pacific Crest Trail), happiest with a pack on my back, a camera in hand, and a long trail ahead.
This blog began as a way to document my hikes — both in England, where I live, and in the US, where I’ve hiked extensively, from the high peaks of the Rockies, Sierra, and Cascades to the canyons and deserts of the Southwest. Over time, it’s grown into something more: a space for immersive trip reports, practical route details, and the kind of moments you can’t capture on a map.

What You’ll Find Here: About Fussyphotos
This site blends narrative depth with practical hiking advice. Here’s what you’ll find:
- Trail Reports & Itineraries – Detailed, first‑hand accounts of both day and multi‑day hikes, complete with mileage, elevation, and honest reflections.
- Photography & Visual Storytelling – From alpine lakes to desert landscapes, I aim to capture the character of each place.
- Planning Insights – Permits, campgrounds, choosing a route, and the little logistical quirks that can make or break a trip.
- Safety & Trail Readiness – Notes on terrain, weather, water sources, and gear — the kind of details that help you stay safe and prepared.
- Camping Advice – Tips on wild camping, designated sites, and how to find a pitch that’s both scenic and sensible.
- Road‑Trip Connections – Ideas for linking a hike into a broader itinerary, turning a single trail into part of a bigger adventure.
- Outdoor Access & Preservation – Thoughts on keeping wild places wild while making them accessible to more people.
- YouTube Trail Clips – Many of the hikes featured here also have accompanying videos on my Fussyphotos YouTube channel, where you can subscribe and watch the trails come to life.
- A Bit of Trail Humour – Where appropriate, you’ll find some dry, self-deprecating humour — because we all make mistakes on the trail, and sometimes the best stories begin with a wrong turn.
Why “Fussyphotos”?
Because I’m meticulous — about framing a shot, choosing the right words, and making sure the details are right. Whether it’s a blog post or a campsite choice, I believe the small things add up to a better hike and story. That same fussiness applies to trail safety and logistics too — because the right permit, pitch, or water plan can make or break a trip. Getting it spot on isn’t just satisfying — it’s essential.
A Little About Me
I live in England and hike year-round with my partner, balancing trail time with work and family life. I’ve extensively travelled the western US — my hiking home away from home and the inspiration behind this blog.
