Walking the 79‑mile Yorkshire Wolds Way is far less demanding than the Pennine Way or other upland National Trails. The route crosses rolling chalk hills, farmland and dry valleys, with villages spaced just far enough apart to keep you self‑sufficient without needing a full expedition load. This packing list is designed for walkers completing the trail over 4–6 days, whether staying in B&Bs or mixing in the occasional campsite.
The Wolds Way is rarely remote, but long stretches between services — especially north of Fridaythorpe — mean you should still carry enough kit to stay comfortable, safe and flexible.
Navigation & Safety
- OS map or GPX — signage is good, but field paths and dale junctions can be confusing.
- Compass — rarely needed, but useful in poor visibility.
- GPS app — OS Maps, Komoot or Maps.Me for example
- Power bank + cable — phone battery drains quickly on long days.
- Headtorch — essential for early starts or late finishes.
- Whistle + foil blanket — lightweight safety basics.
- Waterproof phone pouch — chalkland showers pass quickly, but electronics still need protection.
Clothing & Footwear
- Walking shoes or lightweight boots — chalk and grass dominate; heavy boots are unnecessary.
- Walking socks — one pair per day plus a spare.
- Waterproof jacket — showers blow through fast but can be sharp.
- Lightweight waterproof trousers — optional in summer, useful in spring/autumn.
- Warm mid‑layer — evenings and exposed tops can be breezy.
- Quick‑dry base layers — ideal for warm days on open farmland.
- Sun hat / cap — little shade on the tops.
- Gloves — only needed outside summer.
Overnight Kit (B&Bs, Inns & Hotels)
If you plan on sleeping indoors, you can keep this simple.
- Lightweight sleeping bag liner
- Microfibre towel
- Minimal wash kit
- Comfortable evening clothes — optional but welcome after long days.
Camping Kit (If Using the Two Campsites)
There are only two campsites on the Wolds Way, so most walkers camp selectively.
- 1–2 season sleeping bag — nights are mild from late spring to early autumn.
- Sleeping mat
- Tent or bivvy — lightweight options work well.
- Camping pillow (or stuff sack with clothes)
Food, Water & Cooking
- Water bottles (1.5–2L) — enough for long stretches between taps.
- Snacks — flapjack, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate.
- Lunch items — sandwiches, wraps, pastries.
- Electrolytes — useful on warm chalkland days.
- Stove + simple meals (only if camping) — dehydrated meals, noodles, rice, porridge etc.
Note: Water sources in dry valleys are unreliable; treat taps and shops as your main supply.
Hygiene & Personal Items
- Toilet roll
- Hand sanitiser
- Small rubbish bags
- Basic first‑aid kit
- Blister plasters — chalk paths can be hard underfoot.
- Sunscreen — essential in summer; the Wolds are exposed.
Useful Extras
- Walking poles — helpful on steep dry‑valley climbs.
- Sit mat — ideal for long, grassy lunch stops.
- Sunglasses — bright chalk glare on sunny days.
- Small repair kit — tape, needle, thread.
- Lightweight book or Kindle — evenings in quiet villages are peaceful.
How to Pack for the Wolds Way
- Keep waterproofs and snacks near the top.
- Store heavy items close to your spine.
- Use side pockets for water and maps.
- Keep electronics in waterproof bags.
- If camping, pack tent poles vertically for better balance.
Why Packing Matters on the Wolds Way
The Wolds Way is gentle, but long days between villages, exposed tops and limited shade mean comfort comes from carrying the right amount — not too much, not too little. A light, simple kit makes the miles flow easily, especially on warm summer days when the chalk glows and the dry valleys feel endless.
